Teigland-Hunt LLP

Challenges

Teigland-Hunt LLP was experiencing technical challenges with their WordPress platform and it was becoming unmanageable. They were also not properly maintaining their website leaving them vulnerable to hackers. Since they launched their website two years ago they were not ready to invest in a new website solution, so Code83 suggested performing a website audit and website maintenance to identify new opportunities for improvement and correcting any existing challenges.

Solutions

Code83 performed an extensive review of the front and back-end of the website to uncover opportunities and repair their website. Below are some insights into what our audit was able to uncover, but the main issue was the site was not  truly responsive and there were many parts of the site that no longer worked. We worked with Teigland-Hunt LLP to make all the neccassary updates and they  now have a refreshed responsive design, are up-to-date, secured and compliant with website standards.

Improve website performance and loading time:

  • Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content
  • Add browser caching
  • Compress/Minify HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Optimize Images

Perform website maintenance:

  • 3 years worth of security risks
  • WordPress Core significantly out of date
  • Repair depreciated custom code to fix the events and publications sections
  • Repair incompatible plugins so contact form worked correctly
  • Repair WP functionalities so the website would operate smoothly

Additional findings:

  • Default "admin" username was in use (security risk)
  • The _wp default database prefix was in use (security risk)
  • The home and contact pages were not manageable through the back-end on their WordPress platform.

Website design findings:

  • Inconsistency in responsive/mobile design: After testing the site on various screen resolutions including: desktops, laptops and mobile and tablet devices. The treatment of the header and menu was inconsistent as the resolution of the browser and device changes. We discovered the website was not truly responsive, but only accommodated users that were on a large desktop or old mobile device.
  • Mobile navigation: Menu design was not user friendly and didn't work properly.
  • Inconsistent typography: The typography throughout the website was an unintentional mixture of museo-sans and freight without a hierarchy.

Client wish list:

  • Update number of Tweets displayed on home page
  • Have entire title show in Events section
  • Have the download buttons link directly to PDFs in the publications section
  • Training to properly manage the website
